Dyson’s $499 AI Toothbrush: What It Can and Can’t Do for Your Smile

If you have seen the headlines about Dyson's new toothbrush, you may be wondering whether a $499 brush with a camera belongs in your bathroom. Bring that question to your next cleaning.

You do not need the newest gadget to take good care of your teeth. You need a routine that fits your mouth and that you will keep.

What the Dyson CameraJet does

Dyson announced the CameraJet on September 1, 2026, at $499. It pairs a sonic toothbrush with a small camera and a jet. According to Dyson, the camera takes 28 images a second, an AI system looks for the gaps between your teeth, and the brush sends a jet of mouthrinse into a gap within a tenth of a second of finding it. The brush head has firmer bristles in the center for stains and softer bristles at the edge for the gumline. A companion app shows the camera view and maps the areas you have cleaned. The brush connects over Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Dyson states: "No images are recorded or stored on the product or in the cloud." Dyson: CameraJet announcement

What Dyson's claims rest on

Dyson says the CameraJet removes up to 69% more plaque than leading premium electric toothbrushes in hard-to-reach areas. That figure comes from a laboratory test, run with the jet turned off. Dyson's stain claim compares the brush with a manual toothbrush, also in lab tests. Dyson: CameraJet announcement

Lab results are a starting point. They cannot tell you how your gums will look after a year of use. Before paying for any device, ask how it compares with a good electric brush plus the way you clean between your teeth now.

A rocky start

Within weeks of launch, Dyson stopped selling the CameraJet in several countries, including the UK and France, after buyers reported water getting inside the device. Dyson told reporters the cause was a manufacturing problem in one batch of jet tubes that affected a small number of brushes. In its September 30 update, Dyson said it was in full production and shipping products. Dyson: September 30 update BeautyMatter: Launch timeline

A camera that finds gaps is not a dental exam

Dyson describes the camera as a way to find and target the spaces between teeth. It is not presented as a tool for checking cavities, gum disease, or worn fillings. Dyson: CameraJet announcement Those still need a dental exam.

Cleaning between your teeth matters because plaque builds up there, and plaque can lead to tooth decay and gum disease. Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, and clean between your teeth once a day with the tool you will use. Options include floss, small interdental brushes, picks, and water flossers. Ask which suits your mouth. NIDCR: Oral hygiene If you are weighing your options, our post on water flossers and string floss walks through them.

When the gap is the one you see in the mirror

A toothbrush cannot close a gap. If the gaps on your mind are the ones you notice when you smile, start by having the cause checked. A space between teeth is not always a cosmetic issue alone, so the exam comes before any talk of treatment.

SiRa's cosmetic dentistry services include bonding and tooth contouring, porcelain veneers, and clear aligners. Which option fits, if any, depends on your teeth, your bite, and what you want to change.

Stains are a separate question. If brighter teeth are the reason a new brush appeals to you, ask whether the stain is on the surface and whether teeth whitening, which SiRa also offers, would suit your teeth.

Questions to ask before you buy

Bring the question that matches what you are hoping a new brush will solve:

If you are hoping to… Ask your dental team
Stop skipping the floss "What is the simplest tool that would work for my mouth?"
Clean around braces, a bridge, or an implant "Can you show me how to clean around this, and would a jet help?"
Brighten stained teeth "Is this stain on the surface, and would whitening help?"
Close a gap you see when you smile "What is causing this space, and what are my options?"
Spend $499 where it counts "What would make the biggest difference for my gums?"

Before you buy, or after

If you already own a CameraJet, bring it to your next cleaning and ask whether your hygienist can watch you use it. If you are still deciding, ask where plaque builds up in your mouth and whether a new tool would make a difference.
